Medicare to Cover Opioid Treatment Program Services Starting in 2020

Starting January 1, 2020, CMS plans to pay for Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs), including medication-assisted treatment (MAT) medications, toxicology testing, and counseling provided to Medicare Part B beneficiaries.

To participate in the new program, providers must be:

  • Certified by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and by accredited by a SAMHSA-approved accrediting body.

  • Enrolled in Medicare Part B.

Additional information will be forthcoming on the OTP webpage on or around November 1, 2019.
